Fran Hughes (a.k.a. The Bear)- Fran was a school teacher for 33 years. He played university football for U.N.B.- Fredericton for 4 years as a tight end.  He was the second leading scorer in the league in his second year. He taught and coached football at St. Malachy's High in 1969 with Fran McHugh, founder of the St. Malachy's football program. Dennis Knibb,  then principal of Saint John High School, wanted to introduce football into the school and sent Athletic Director Jack Brownell to see Fran . Fran accepted and football  began at SJHS in 1970. Fran coached football at SJHS until 2003. He also became SJHS athletic director and coached several other sports besides football. He gave up the head coach position when he retired from teaching in 1999.  Fran is well loved  by his former players as he gave up every night and every weekend for them . Fran also coached his 3 sons, Andy, Philip and Eric at Saint John High. Fran helped and guided a lot of young people with his caring  and committed character. Fran still continues to coach sports at Rothesay High.- submitted by Barry Ogden, March 2008
